Durham Writers Breakfast Circle

It was great to speak to writers in Whitby this morning. What a supportive, dynamic group. I shared how I write what I know AND what I need to discover. Chances are good that if I feel intensely curious about something, readers will too.

In my latest novel I wrote about a Palestinian girl after I decided to see for myself what was happening in the West Bank. After staying with a poor family outside Hebron whose home and lands had been threatened by settlements I felt compelled to research the conflict and write a story. It’s a subject that interested me ever since I lived on kibbutzim in Israel as a teenager - but I had never imagined “the other side”.
